The free state of Bavaria offers a variety of beautiful castles. The most famous one is Neuschwanstein castle in the South of Bavaria, which was built for King Ludwig II as of 1869 and is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Another highlight is Linderhof castle. It is one of the three great castles of King Ludwig II and is the only one that was completed before his death. Here the fairy-tale king lived most of the time.

The third largest residence of Ludwig II - the castle Herrenchiemsee, situated idyllically on an island in the Chiemsee. This monumental building has been built according to the plans of the Palace of Versailles.
